Thank you for addressing writing. In kindergarten we start by teaching students to draw pictures that hold meaning, not just doodling. They verbally tell their stories. From there we move onto labeling the pictures, starting with just the first sound they hear, i.e. ‘s’ for sun. They then move into first and last sound labels, and then middle sounds. We then move into three page books with a beginning, middle and end. We emphasize telling true stories, as made up stories can sometimes get away from them. By then, students know enough sounds and high frequency words to start trying sentences. We teach the students revision by explaining that revision is love. If you love something as special as their stories, you want it to be the best it can be. I love teaching writing and am so glad you are including it in your trainings! Thank you!

      Hi Barbara,
Thank you so much for sharing your kindergarten writing instruction methods. It sounds very approachable and meaningful for students, and I know other members will benefit from reading it as well! Please let us know if you ever have any ideas for writing tools we can create for you!
