#18 Creating a calm classroom with social-emotional learning with Lana Penley

Picture this: You start your day with high hopes, but within minutes, your classroom feels like a whirlwind of emotions. Some students are restless, others are frustrated, and a few seem completely disengaged. Teaching in this environment is exhausting. Sound familiar?

The truth is, many students today struggle with emotional regulation, especially post-pandemic. As educators, we’re tasked with not only teaching academics but also helping students develop essential life skills—like managing emotions and building strong relationships. This is where social-emotional learning (SEL) can transform your classroom into a calm, high-functioning environment where students and teachers thrive.

I invited Lana onto the podcast after getting an advanced copy of her new book, Unlocking SEL. In this episode, Lana shares her social emotional learning blueprint so you can create the calm, peaceful, high functioning classroom that empowers you AND your students to reach your fullest potential.

What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

At its core, SEL helps students develop self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills, and decision-making abilities. Implementing SEL in the classroom isn’t just about adding a few mindfulness activities—it’s about creating a culture of emotional intelligence that supports learning.

Research shows that SEL improves academic performance, reduces behavioral issues, and increases teacher well-being. When students feel emotionally secure and valued, they are more engaged and ready to learn.

How to Create a Calm Classroom with Social-Emotional Learning

1. Establish Daily Mindfulness Practices

Starting each day with a mindful moment sets a positive tone for learning. Try:

  • Breathing exercises: Guide students through simple deep breathing to help them feel centered.
  • Gratitude check-ins: Ask students to share something they’re thankful for.
  • Soft starts: Begin with calming music or journaling before diving into instruction.

2. Design a Supportive Classroom Environment

Your physical space plays a crucial role in creating a sense of calm. Consider:

  • Peace corners: Designate a quiet space where students can self-regulate when overwhelmed.
  • Flexible seating: Give students choices for where and how they work best.
  • Soft lighting & visuals: Warm lighting and nature-themed decorations can make the room feel inviting.

3. Teach Emotional Regulation Strategies

Explicitly teaching students how to manage emotions helps prevent classroom disruptions. Some effective strategies include:

  • Name It to Tame It: Encourage students to label their emotions to reduce their intensity.
  • The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique: Guide students to focus on their senses to bring them back to the present.
  • Calm-down jars: A visual and tactile tool for helping students refocus.

4. Integrate SEL into Academic Instruction

SEL doesn’t have to be an “extra” lesson—it can be embedded into everyday learning:

  • Read-alouds with emotional themes: Discuss character emotions and decision-making.
  • Collaborative group work: Encourage teamwork and problem-solving.
  • Writing reflections: Have students journal about their feelings and experiences.

5. Prioritize Teacher Well-Being

SEL isn’t just for students—teachers need it too. Protecting your own mental health ensures you can show up as your best self. Try:

  • Setting boundaries: Avoid overextending yourself and carve out personal time.
  • Practicing mindfulness: Take a few deep breaths between lessons.
  • Building a support network: Connect with colleagues to share strategies and encouragement.

In This Episode, You’ll Discover:

  • Why SEL is essential for creating a calm classroom.
  • How mindfulness helps both teachers and students regulate emotions.
  • Practical strategies for reducing chaos and increasing student engagement.
  • The impact of teacher well-being on classroom success.

Bringing It All Together

Creating a calm classroom isn’t about controlling students—it’s about empowering them with the skills they need to navigate their emotions and relationships. By integrating social-emotional learning into daily routines, you’ll build an environment where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
